Popular baby names

The Office for National Statistics has just revealed the most popular baby names of 2017. So if you’re struggling to find the perfect name, here are some ideas that could spark your imagination. Whether you’re seeking inspiration among the current trends, or you’re keen to find something unique that would never make the top 100, look no further than the latest report…

It may be no surprise that Oliver and Olivia hold onto the top spots for another year, although in some regions Muhammad has overtaken Oliver as number one. Leo joins the top ten 10 for the first time this year, replacing Thomas, and is the only new addition to the boys top 10. There are a few new additions to the top 100 including Hunter and Ralph for boys, and Aurora and Hallie for girls.

Vintage names

These were popular last year and they’re still rising. Are you taking inspiration from your grandparents (or even great-grandparents)? For the girls, lovely old-fashioned sounding Ivy, Lottie and Bonnie have all risen up the rankings. The same can be said for the boys as Albie moves up to 57 and Bobby rises 25 places to 65 this year.

Literary heroines

Some of our favourite children’s story characters remain popular choices such as Matilda, Heidi and Lola, and for the Potter generation Luna has risen 30 places to sit at number 48.

Surnames as first names

This is particularly true for boys’ names this year with Hunter moving up an impressive 39 places, while Harrison, Carter and Jackson are also still in demand.

Vowel sounds

This was a trend identified in last year’s report and it’s proving to be ever-more popular. The letter A is bringing some previously unusual names to the fore, including Arlo for a boy and Aurora and Aria for girls. There’s also a biblical theme to the popular boys’ vowel names as Elijah and Ezra creep upwards.
