At last, the end is in sight and you can start counting down the days until you get to meet your baby. As exciting as this is, the final trimester comes with its fair share of trials and tribulations. Here’s a few you might recognise…
1. You’re always planning your next loo trip
Having a baby on board means extra pressure on your bladder especially in the final trimester, so you’ll probably find yourself running for the loo the minute you arrive anywhere – whether it’s a coffee shop, shopping centre, wedding, train station… Good news is, everyone can see you’re pregnant so chances are they’ll let you jump the queue.
2. The ‘nesting instinct’ is not a myth
In the last weeks of pregnancy, you might find yourself suddenly wanting everything sparklingly clean and tidy. Weird, isn’t it? You’ll clean parts of your house you never even looked at before. Make the most of it – you won’t have much time for tidying soon!
3. You’re doing everything as a couple ‘for the last time’
Preparing for parenthood is pretty surreal, and some expectant mums find themselves feeling in limbo between their ‘old life’ and the unknown new chapter once baby arrives. In the last few weeks, you might feel like this is your last trip to the cinema, your last meal out or your last cosy night on the sofa. But don’t worry, you can still find ways to spend time as a couple once the baby arrives.
4. Your Google search history is basically just a list of articles about labour and birth
You’re obsessed with finding out what labour feels like, and spend hours Googling for any information that will help you prepare for what’s ahead. Spoiler alert: it probably won’t be anything like what you’ve imagined, so keep an open mind.
5. You’ve forgotten what it feels like to sleep through the night
Whether it’s going to the loo through the night, or the struggle to find a comfortable position with your growing bump, there’s slim chance of a full night’s sleep in your final trimester. Try to unwind and relax as much as you can before bed, and consider investing in a pregnancy pillow to help make sleeping comfier.
6. You could be mistaken for the cookie monster
You seem to be hungry all the time, and fortunately experts suggest you need a few extra calories in your final trimester. However, you should still pay attention to your diet to make sure you are getting the right nutrients for both you and your baby. Luckily there are some brilliant, healthy pregnancy foods.
7. It’s an emotional rollercoaster
The whole of pregnancy is spent dealing with rollercoaster hormones, but the final trimester can be just one mood swing after another. Your levels of progesterone and oestrogen are at their highest, you’re tired, uncomfortable, and as your due date approaches you may just want it to be over. Whether it’s crying over a soppy TV advert, snapping when your dinner isn’t up to scratch, or sobbing because you can’t tie your own shoes – remember that what you’re feeling is completely normal at this point. It’ll all be worth it once your baby gets here.
8. You just can’t WAIT to meet your little one
If your due date is approaching, or you’ve already passed it, you’ll find yourself wanting to try anything to get your baby to appear. You might find yourself obsessively researching for old wives’ tales that claim to induce labour – like eating a spicy curry, snacking on fresh pineapple, and even having sex with your partner (remember that?!) Unfortunately every pregnancy is different, so what works for some women won’t for others – and your baby probably knows exactly when they want to appear anyway! Just enjoy having time to yourself in the last child-free days before everything changes…
